Greetings fellow artist and arts lovers!
Today (4/26/18) was the Network's first ever gathering, a brain storming session that included:
Beth Goss Church of the Covenant
Victor Hamels Emmanuel Indonesian PC
Jess Fisher Western PC/Church of the Pilgrims
Billy Klutz Immanuel PC/Church of the Pilgrims
Doug Mar Immanuel PC
Barbara Heck Bush Hill PC
Mike McNamara Mission Specialist NCP/Adelphi PC
The conversation was wonderful, all those in attendance got to share their passions for Arts and what they would love to see happen with an Arts Network at the presbytery level. Folks spoke of their passion for painting, music, liturgical arts, drama, improv, writing, photography and wood carving.
Two general themes were identified. First is art within congregations, specifically art around worship, but also art associated with bible study and pastoral care. Second was a call to bring art into the communities that surround congregations, and the various different ways to facilitate that process. We also talked about ways to integrate art into building development/redevelopment as well as offering workshops and classes, inviting in artists from beyond the bounds of the presbytery.
We decided the best way to keep things going would be to continue to meet and to bring in more people. An event is being planned for July 14th at 1pm. The goal is to continue the conversation and hopefully offer some sort of workshop around integrating art into worship. The location will be either Bush Hill PC or Western PC, with more information to come soon.
The hope is that the conversation continues and that space is created within the presbytery for not only arts within congregation, but out in the community as well.
Networks require seven churches to form, and we already have interest from at least nine churches. Beth Goss agreed to draft a network charter, expect to see drafts of that start to circulate in the coming months so that this Network can become offical.
Space on the website: www.nationalcapitalmission.org has been carved out for this network, currently this letter is the only thing on it, but if you are interested in created a layout for the page, let me (Mike McNamara firstname.lastname@example.org) know and I can give you access to the back end of the site for creating a landing place for the work of this Network.
In general, we are exited about the possiblities and look forward to engaging more and more people in this work!
