What’s It Like to Sponsor a Refugee Family?
In light of the growing refugee crisis, more congregations and other groups are considering ways to help, including sponsorship of a refugee family. But they have questions. What’s involved in partnering with a refugee resettlement agency? What are we expected to do for the family? Does our group have the financial and volunteer resources to take this on?
Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, working with Lutheran Social Services of the National
Capital Area (LSS-NCA), welcomed a family in March, and will host a conversation on
Saturday, June 18, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for anyone interested in learning more about
The workshop will give an overview of levels of involvement, and practical information
including what to expect when working with a family, community resources available to
refugees, and how to engage your whole congregation in the project.
The panel will include:
- Merritt Groeschel, Chair, CCPC Refugee Resettlement Task Force
- Aerlande Wontamo, Senior Resettlement Manager, LSS-NCA Refugee and Immigrant Services
- Chloe Shiras, Case Manager, LSS-NCA
The conversation will be held in Geneva Hall, 2nd Floor, Chevy Chase Presbyterian, 1 Chevy Chase Circle.
Note that there is limited parking in the church lot, mainly for people with mobility issues, but there is street parking on both sides of the church.
